My grandmother, Nan, was a seamstress.

She lived next door to me in Pilot Point, Texas, and I spent countless summer afternoons walking over to her house. We’d sit for hours around the kitchen table while we worked with our hands.

We smocked dresses, made runners, quilted blankets. She taught me how to sew, but somehow, in the middle of all of that, she was teaching me how to live.

We gardened. We canned vegetables, made jams. She baked cakes simply because there was someone or something worth celebrating.

She found joy in making beautiful things and sharing them with the people she loved. She also adored the handmade gifts people in turn gave her.

Small, faithful acts of love repeated over and over, woven together into something far greater than any one moment. A tapestry that connects generations.


That’s what she built.


That’s what she passed on.


And I hope that every time someone wears it, they’re reminded that the richest lives aren’t always the loudest ones.
